Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga — The Despondency of Arjuna

Essence of the Chapter

English

As the two armies stand arrayed on the field of Kurukshetra, Arjuna asks Krishna to place the chariot between them. Seeing his beloved teachers, elders and friends on both sides, Arjuna is overcome with grief. He sees only destruction ahead — the destruction of family, tradition and dharma. He throws down his bow and refuses to fight. The chapter plants the seed of the entire Gita: the crisis of dharma begins not on the battlefield but in the heart of a good man facing a moral dilemma.

ENSeeing all his kinsmen standing there, Arjuna, filled with deep compassion, spoke these words in great despondency.

dṛṣṭvemaṁ svajanaṁ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam |
sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati || 1.28 ||
ENO Krishna, seeing my own kinsmen arrayed here, eager for battle, my limbs give way and my mouth is parched.

kiṁ no rājyena govinda kiṁ bhogair jīvitena vā |
yeṣām arthe kāṅkṣitaṁ no rājyaṁ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca || 1.32 ||
ENO Govinda, of what use is this kingdom to us, of what use are enjoyments or even life itself, when those for whose sake we desired kingdom, enjoyments and pleasures stand arrayed here ready to be killed?
