Sāṅkhya Yoga — Transcendental Knowledge

Essence of the Chapter

English

Krishna begins by dispelling Arjuna's grief through knowledge of the immortal Self. The soul is unborn, eternal and indestructible; it only changes bodies as a person changes clothes. Therefore Arjuna should not grieve for the death of bodies — and he must perform his duty as a warrior. The chapter introduces the two great paths that frame the Gita: Sāṅkhya (the path of discriminating knowledge) and Yoga (the path of disciplined action). It ends with the description of the sthita-prajña — the person of steady wisdom — who has gone beyond attachment, anger and desire.

dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā |
tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati || 2.13 ||
ENJust as the embodied soul passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it obtains another body; the wise are not deluded by this.
na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ |
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre || 2.20 ||
ENIt is never born, nor does it ever die; nor, having existed, will it ever cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient — it is not slain when the body is slain.

karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana |
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi || 2.47 ||
ENYou have a right to action alone, never to its fruits. Do not be motivated by the fruits of action, nor be attached to inaction.
yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya |
siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga ucyate || 2.48 ||
ENEstablished in yoga, perform your actions, having abandoned attachment, O Dhananjaya — remaining balanced in success and failure; evenness of mind is called yoga.
sthita-prajñasya kā bhāṣā samādhi-sthasya keśava |
sthita-dhīḥ kiṁ prabhāṣeta kim āsīta vrajeta kim || 2.54 ||
ENWhat is the mark of one of steady wisdom, established in deep absorption, O Keshava? How does the steady-minded one speak, how does he sit, how does he walk?
