2. Project Management Methodologies

Methodologies

Agile Methodology

Agile focuses on iterative development, collaboration, and responding to change. Key principles from the Agile Manifesto:

Popular Agile frameworks include Scrum (sprints, daily standups, retrospectives) and Kanban (visual boards, WIP limits, continuous delivery).

Case Study: Spotify uses Agile with Squads (small cross-functional teams), Tribes (groups of squads), and Chapters/Guilds for cross-team coordination. This structure enables rapid feature releases while maintaining alignment.

PRINCE2

PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a process-based method with seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes. Key features:

Traditional (Waterfall) PM

Linear, sequential approach with distinct phases: Initiation → Planning → Execution → Monitoring → Closure. Best suited for projects with clear requirements and low uncertainty.

Extreme Project Management (XPM)

For high-uncertainty, high-speed projects. Embraces change, uses lightweight documentation, and relies heavily on team communication and stakeholder involvement.

Process-Based Management

Focuses on optimizing business processes rather than individual tasks. Uses techniques like Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Six Sigma to improve efficiency and quality.

Practice Task: Choose a project (e.g., building a mobile app, organizing a conference, constructing a building). Select the most suitable methodology and justify your choice. Create a one-page comparison of Agile vs Waterfall for your chosen project.
