Puruṣottama Yoga — The Yoga of the Supreme Person

Essence of the Chapter

English

Krishna describes the world as the inverted ashvattha tree, rooted above in Brahman with branches below — the tree of samsara that must be cut down with the axe of dispassion. He then reveals that the jīva, the living soul, is an eternal fragment of himself, carrying the mind and senses through the worlds. He is the radiance in the sun, moon and fire, the one dwelling in the heart of all, the source of memory and knowledge. At the end he declares himself the Puruṣottama, the Supreme Person, beyond both the perishable and the imperishable — knowing whom, one becomes the knower of all.
